INspiring WORD

“You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him,
for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
You shall not afflict any widow or orphan.
If you afflict him at all, and if he does cry out to Me,
I will surely hear his cry; and My anger will be kindled,
and I will kill you with the sword,
and your wives shall become widows
and your children fatherless. Exodus 22: 21-24

For the Lord your God is the God of gods
and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty,
and the awesome God who does not show
partiality nor take a bribe. He executes justice
for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love
for the alien by giving him food and clothing.
So show your love for the alien, for you were
aliens in the land of Egypt. Deuteronomy 10: 17-19

“At the end of every third year you shall bring
out all the tithe of your produce in that year,
and shall deposit it in your town.
The Levite, because he has no portion
or inheritance among you, and the alien,
the orphan and the widow who are in your town,
shall come and eat and be satisfied, in order that
the Lord your God may bless you in all the work
of your hand which you do. Deuteronomy 14: 28-29

Then you shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks
to the Lord your God with a tribute of a freewill
offering of your hand, which you shall give just
as the Lord your God blesses you; and you
shall rejoice before the Lord your God, you and
your son and your daughter and your male and
female servants and the Levite who is in your town,
and the stranger and the orphan and the widow
who are in your midst, in the place where the Lord
your God chooses to establish His name. You shall
remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and you
shall be careful to observe these statutes. Deuteronomy 16: 10-12

“You shall not pervert the justice
due an alien or an orphan,
nor take a widow’s garment in pledge.
But you shall remember that you were
a slave in Egypt, and that the Lord
your God redeemed you from there;
therefore I am commanding you
to do this thing. “When you reap
your harvest in your field and have
forgotten a sheaf in the field, you
shall not go back to get it; it shall
be for the alien, for the orphan,
and for the widow, in order that
the Lord your God may bless you
in all the work of your hands.
When you beat your olive tree,
you shall not go over the boughs again;
it shall be for the alien, for the orphan,
and for the widow. “When you gather
the grapes of your vineyard, you shall
not go over it again; it shall be for the
alien, for the orphan, and for the widow. Deuteronomy 24: 17-21

Now behold, I have brought
the first of the produce of the
ground which You, O Lord have
given me.’ And you shall set it
down before the Lord your God,
and worship before the Lord
your God; and you and the Levite
and the alien who is among you
shall rejoice in all the good which
the Lord your God has given you
and your household.
“When you have finished paying
all the tithe of your increase in the
third year, the year of tithing, then
you shall give it to the Levite, to the
stranger, to the orphan and to the
widow, that they may eat in your towns
and be satisfied. You shall say before
the Lord your God, ‘I have removed
the sacred portion from my house, and
also have given it to the Levite and the
alien, the orphan and the widow,
according to all Your commandments
which You have commanded me; I have
not transgressed or forgotten any
of Your commandments. Deuteronomy 26: 10-13

“For when the ear heard, it called me blessed,
And when the eye saw, it gave witness of me,
Because I delivered the poor who cried for help,
And the orphan who had no helper.
“The blessing of the one ready to perish
came upon me,
And I made the widow’s heart sing for joy. Job 29:11-13

“If I have kept the poor from their desire,
Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
Or have eaten my morsel alone,
And the orphan has not shared it
(But from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,
And from infancy I guided her),
If I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing,
Or that the needy had no covering,
If his loins have not thanked me,
And if he has not been warmed with the
fleece of my sheep,
If I have lifted up my hand against
the orphan,
Because I saw I had support in the gate,
Let my shoulder fall from the socket,
And my arm be broken off at the elbow.
“For calamity from God is a terror to me,
And because of His majesty I can do nothing. Job 31: 16-23

You have seen it, for You have beheld
mischief and vexation to take it into
Your hand.
The unfortunate commits himself to You;
You have been the helper of the orphan. Psalm 10:14

O Lord, You have heard the desire
of the humble;
You will strengthen their heart,
You will incline Your ear
To vindicate the orphan
and the oppressed,
So that man who is of the earth
will no longer cause terror. Psalm 10: 17-18

A father of the fatherless
and a judge for the widows,
Is God in His holy habitation. Psalm 68:5

“How long will you defend the unjust
and show partiality to the wicked?
Defend the weak and the fatherless;
uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.
Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked. Psalm 82:2-4

The Lord protects the strangers;
He supports the fatherless and the widow,
But He thwarts the way of the wicked. Psalm 146:9

Open your mouth for the mute,
For the rights of all the unfortunate.
Open your mouth, judge righteously,
And defend the rights of the afflicted and needy. Proverbs 31: 8-9

Learn to do good; Seek justice,
Reprove the ruthless,
Defend the orphan, Plead for the widow. Isaiah 1:17

“Is this not the fast which I choose,
To loosen the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the bands of the yoke,
And to let the oppressed go free
And break every yoke?
“Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry
And bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the naked, to cover him;
And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
“Then your light will break out like the dawn,
And your recovery will speedily spring forth;
And your righteousness will go before you;
The glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
“Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
You will cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you remove the yoke from your midst,
The pointing of the finger and speaking wickedness,
And if you give yourself to the hungry
And satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
Then your light will rise in darkness
And your gloom will become like midday.
“And the Lord will continually guide you,
And satisfy your desire in scorched places,
And give strength to your bones;
And you will be like a watered garden,
And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.
“Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins;
You will raise up the age-old foundations;
And you will be called the repairer of the breach,
The restorer of the [g]streets in which to dwell.
Keeping the Sabbath
“If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot
From doing your own pleasure on My holy day,
And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable,
And honor it, desisting from your own ways,
From seeking your own pleasure
And speaking your own word,
Then you will take delight in the Lord,
And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” Isaiah 58: 6-14

Thus says the Lord,
“Do justice and righteousness,
and deliver the one who has been
robbed from the power of his oppressor.
Also do not mistreat or do violence to the
stranger, the orphan, or the widow;
and do not shed innocent blood in this place. Jeremiah 22:3

Take words with you and return to the Lord.
Say to Him, “Take away all iniquity
And receive us graciously,
That we may present the fruit of our lips.
“Assyria will not save us,
We will not ride on horses;
Nor will we say again, ‘Our god,’
To the work of our hands;
For in You the orphan finds mercy.”
I will heal their apostasy,
I will love them freely,
For My anger has turned away from them. Hosea 14: 2-4

“Thus has the Lord of hosts said,
‘Dispense true justice and practice
kindness and compassion each to his brother;
and do not oppress the widow or the orphan,
the stranger or the poor; and do not devise
evil in your hearts against one another.’ Zechariah 7: 9-10

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. John 14:18

Pure and undefiled religion in the sight
of our God and Father is this: to visit
orphans and widows in their distress,
and to keep oneself unstained by the world. James 1:27
